6 Month Rule Resource Center -- Intern Development Program - I.D.P.

National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) will vote on Resolution 2008-7, at its annual meeting in Pittsburg, PA on June 28, 2008. If approved, NCARB will be authorized by its member boards to limit the validity of IDP training experience to the timeliness of its reporting. Timely reporting as defined in the resolution occurs at maximum of 8 months from the date experience is received. This change will affect all IDP enrollees, starting with new enrollees in July, 2009 and then all enrollees in July 2010. The resolution also makes reference to adding an online reporting system to its web site, and creating supervisor guidelines: two objectives of NCARB that will happen regardless of the approval or rejection of this resolution.
NCARB Position:

The resolution is being sponsored (11-0) by NCARB's Board of Directors. NCARB's position will be decided at their annual meeting in the form of a vote on resolution 2008-7

AIA Position:

On May 13, 2008, the AIA Board of Directors voted to request:

NCARB suspend any action on limitations to IDP reporting periods (through the 6-month rule[)] until a comprehensive evaluation can be conducted of the new online reporting system.

A collaborative effort between the AIA and NCARB in satisfying NCARB's documentation concerns through the examination of time sensitive reporting including the evaluation of the new online system by an independent third party(ies) selected jointly by the AIA and NCARB, the appropriate review of the "timeliness" of reporting in this modern context, and the development of recommendations concerning changes to IDP training unit reporting.

IDPAC Position:

The IDPAC does not support this resolution at this time; arcitrack.org awaits published minutes from its most recent meeting, to report on specifics.

The IDP Advisory Committee (IDPAC) was created in 1975 by NCARB and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and exists as a joint NCARB/AIA advisory committee. The IDPAC advises NCARB and AIA on matters relating to improving the Intern Development Program.

Intern Development Program (IDP):

IDP is a joint program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
