ADA Standards for Accessible Design
These are the enforceable, federal accessible design standards referenced in the Americans with Disabilities Act for design and construction of private and public facilities

Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS)
These are the enforceable, federal accessible design standards that must be used (sometimes in addition to ADAAG) for design and construction of facilities whose owners receive federal funds.

Federal Fair Housing Act Accessibility Guidelines
These are the accessible design guidelines (not standards) for new construction of multi-family housing.

This supplement provides useful, additional information to understand and interpret the Federal Fair Housing Act and its Accessibility Guidelines.

Federal Regulations
ADA Title II Regulations 28 CFR PART 35 – State and Local Governments (public entities)
These are the federal reguations issued by the U.S. Department of Justice to implement the section of the Americans with Disabilities Act that applies to state and local government. They provide context for the ADAAG which they reference.

ADA Title III Regulations 28 CFR Part 36 – Public Accommodations and Commercial Facilities (private entities)
These are the federal regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Justice to implement the Americans with Disabilities Act for private entities. The provide context for the ADAAG which they reference.

Federal Fair Housing Act Regulations 24 CFR Part 14
These are HUD’s regulations implementing the Federal Fair Housing Act.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 504 Regulations Title 24 Part 38
These are HUD’s federal regulations that, among other things, include requirements for new construction and alterations and reference the UFAS for design and construction of multi-family housing by entities who receive federal funds.

Federal Laws
The Americans with Disabilities Act Public Law 101-336
This is the federal law which prohibits discrimination based on an individual’s disability and which requires accessible design and construction of most public and commercial facilities.

Architectural Barriers Act
This is the federal law which required that created the federal Access Board and required for the first time that facilities built with federal funds be accessible.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act – Statute
(Scroll down to page 155.) This is the section of the federal law which requires that federal facilities and facilities built by entities that receive federal funds be accessible.
