COTE Meeting Minutes for November 2001
November 14th, 2001

Focus Topic: Water in Green Architecture, Part 3: "Cooling towers & Heat Exchangers - Non-chemical industrial water treatment", "Green RFP Tool" and "Storm water management"

Daniel Wheatley, president of "Electrostatic Systems, Inc." gave a ten minute presentation on non-chemical industrial water treatment solutions for cooling towers & heat exchangers.

· Chemical additive systems cause accumulation of mineral scale & biomass & equipment must then be disassembled for regular cleaning.
· Electrostatic systems use electrostatic rods to charge particles in the water which causes them to repel one another & remain in suspension so bacteria cannot colonize.
· Benefits include long term clean running operations, savings on water & water disposal costs, & toxic use reductions. II.

Kira Gould, assoc. AIA, from the AIA national committee on the environment gave a brief presentation on the "Green RFP Tool", a tool to assist organizations to bring sustainable design & planning into the RFP's.

· Proposed Web based resource
· Guide to elements of green rfp's
· Best practices & lessons learned
· Create a database of various types of green rfp's III.

Daniel Arons, AIA of TK&A Architects, gave a presentation on "Storm water management".

· Leed credits; site credit #6 & #6.1
· Reduce water runoff from the site with less amount of pavement & use of pervious pavement & using green roofs.
· Use of detention ponds to trap runoff & filter out contaminants before releasing water. IV.

Next meeting will be held at BSA, 52 Broad Street, Boston, MA Announcement to be made for upcoming site tours
